UNESCO convened a Disaster Risk Reduction and Social Dialogue Workshop from 12–13 March 2026 at Crossroads Hotel in Lilongwe.

The workshop brought together teachers, teacher educators, representatives Teacher Training Colleges and Universities, representatives of Teachers Unions, and officials from the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (Malawi) to strengthen collaboration in developing national teacher policies.

The discussions focused on improving consultation, negotiation, and information-sharing mechanisms within the education sector to enhance the quality of teaching and learning. Participants also reviewed the current status of social dialogue and Disaster Risk Reduction in Malawi and explored practical strategies for strengthening engagement between teachers, unions, and government institutions.

The forum forms part of efforts under the Norwegian Teacher Initiative (NTI) project aimed at supporting stronger teacher policies and contributing to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 4 on quality education.

The workshop concluded with a renewed commitment among stakeholders to strengthen collaboration and promote inclusive dialogue in Malawi’s education sector. Outcomes from the forum will contribute to the development of a Social Dialogue Manual to guide future engagement among education stakeholders.
