The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit – Basic Education Programme (GIZ/BEP) has supported the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MoEST), the Malawi National Commission for UNESCO and the Teachers Union of Malawi in organising a number of activities to raise awareness on the importance of teachers. One such activity is the Outstanding Teachers Initiative (OTI).  Under this initiative, two outstanding teachers, 1 female and 1 male, are identified in each of the education districts  and are awarded certificates of recognition at a national event where they showcase their teaching talents and interact with fellow teachers and educators. In 2016 positive responses were received from 18 education districts. The identified teachers and their District Education Managers (DEMs) including one teacher from Ekwendeni Primary School, who has worked wonders with a cerebral palsy learner, were invited to a national event that took place at Emmanuel Teachers College, in Lilongwe. Activities at the national event included: – Viewing and listening to some of the work of the selected teachers – Presentation of gifts and certificates of achievement – Performance by Salama Africa to entertain the outstanding teachers In 2017, a similar event took place at Njewa Primary School in Lilongwe where all education districts participated by identifying and sending two outstanding teachers (1 female and 1 male) to the national event where the Minister of Education, Science and Technology, Hon. Bright Msaka, SC was the Guest of Honour.
